How to define social diversity in schools, its uses, its functions? The author analyses questions that have been little addressed until now and shows that prospects for action in terms of reducing school segregation require overcoming the opposition between statism and localism and finding ways to significantly reduce inequalities in schooling conditions in the most disadvantaged areas.
