Diversity and its management in the school classroom

Diversity and its management in the school classroom

Over the past two decades, Greece has seen increased diversity in its classrooms due to immigration, leading to challenges in the educational system. As classrooms become more heterogeneous, issues like marginalization and exclusion based on ethnicity have emerged. Managing this diversity requires fostering acceptance and understanding, as well as adapting teaching methods to prevent inequalities. Various models, such as assimilation, integration, multiculturalism, anti-racism, and interculturalism, offer different approaches to handling diversity, each promoting cultural understanding. However, challenges like prejudices, language barriers, and lack of resources remain, making it essential for teachers to shift from knowledge transmitters to facilitators of inclusive, supportive learning environments. Efforts to integrate foreign students have been ongoing since the 1990s, focusing on fostering equality and acceptance.
